“To be or not to be“, speaks Hamlet in his famous monologue because for him it’s clear that the murderer of his father is his uncle Claudius. For him it’s about the question of whether it’s easier to live with his own fate or to die.

Even if you don’t know much about this renowned play by Shakespeare, when the name Hamlet is dropped, you will most likely think of a pale young man holding a skull phrasing this famous question.

As part of Mrs. Scholz’ advanced English course, we met on Monday, January 20th with Miss Grace Holme, a theater producer, director and actress from England, in a 3-hour workshop to be introduced to Shakespeare, his works and his writing style. In numerous activities we learned about the audience of the time, the Globe theatre, Shakespeare’s different kinds of plays, the topics of the time, the importance of the text, Shakespeare’s poetry, and we even wrote a Shakespeare-style sonnet ourselves. Talking about and acting out short scenes from the different plays was also something we’ve done with a lot of effort and motivation.

The workshop was informative, a lot of fun and a great start into the topic of Shakespeare. We certainly got that iambic pentameter-rhythm flowing through our bodies now.
