About us

This website is owned and designed by class 9.1 from the Otto-Nagel-Gymnasium in Berlin. In the state lottery by the Teach About U.S. intercultural blended-learning platform, the state of Kansas was assigned to us. After we learned a lot about our state’s political situation, the candidates and the election, we created a lot of different creative products which you will find on this website. We really enjoyed the whole process!

The candidates

In the 2024 election, there will be two candidates vying for the presidency. Kamala Harris and Donald Trump with very different mindsets. Kamala Harris vice president will be nominated from the Democrats. Donald Trump, former president of the United States from the Republicans. Who are they? Find out below.

Red again?

Between the rolling hills in the east and the flat prairies in the west,
there is a place known as the sunflower state.
The agriculture here is by far the best,
but also aircraft, computers and electronics get produced on any date.

Here in Kansas, we have a continental weather, but wait.
Did you know that Kansas is located in the tornado valley?
Means that hundreds of tornados in a year are hitting the state,
so the president should have the consequences under control and not get a pain in the belly.

Wichita is the biggest city, but another even more important one is near.
It's Topeka, the capital and the population we now want to scan.
After World War II, many Germans came here,
that's why now a quarter of the population of 2.9 million is German.

In case you didn't know yet,
in the 19th century, in Kansas, there were many Native American people.
But when the government began to put pressure on them, you can bet,
they were all sent to reservations under the spell of the widespread culture of the steeple.

For a very long time, the people here have mainly voted red.
They were guided by their (conservative) religion,
and the faith spread.
Nowadays, over 50 Percent are Christian.

Their religion has a very big impact on their votings.
So let us take a look at the election goals that could influence the result.
There are Democrats and Republicans, and they have very different quotings.
"They" refers to the candidates Kamala Harris and Donald Trump and who is going to exult.

Kamala wants to improve the infrastructure by supporting small businesses.
She also wants to support the Affordable Care Act,
that would help to fight a cheaper fight against illnesses.
Everyone should have the same chances, regardless of skin color or any other fact.

An important point on her list is her support for abortion,
but I'm not sure if that would be compatible with Kansas beliefs.
Her next point could be a contortion.
Kansas loves hunting, and Kamala wants to strict gun laws, so should she be one of their next chiefs?

Perhaps they would respond better to Trump's attitude toward guns,
he says he wants to fight crime but doesn’t want to stricter the laws?
Trump promotes conservative values that would appeal to the state of the flower of suns.
And Kansas could welcome him as their president with applause

Trump talks not just about guns but about the laws of immigration,
he promises that the taxes will lower.
Is the construction of a rocket system that he discussed a sensation?
For who will the state of Kansas vote in the important hour?

Both candidates desperately want to win the race
they even had a very passionate debate.
But for which one is Kansas the right place?
Who will be elected by the Sunflower State?

The election targets of Kamala Harris and Donald Trump

Issue Kamala Harris Donald Trump
Economy Even though growth and jobs creation have been strong in the last few years, a lot of people have financial problems due to inflation. Kamala Harris has stated that she plans investments in the American infrastructure. She promised mortgage assistance for first-time homebuyers, bans on price gouging at the grocery store and a tax credit for parents of newborns. Donald Trump also noticed, that housing and nutrition costs have been a major issue to the population of the United States. Even though a president’s power to lower prices directly is very limited, he plans to expand the United States Energy production and open the Arctic wilderness to oil drilling. He wants to reduce housing costs by preventing undocumented immigrants from getting mortgages.
Abortion Harris has supported women’s right to have an abortion for a long time. Abortion is one of the central issues she addresses in her campaign. “When Congress passes a law to restore reproductive freedoms, as president of the United States, I will sign it into law,” she said at a rally in Georgia. Mrs Harris also was the first vice-president to visit an abortion clinic. Trump himself often said states should be free to decide their own laws on abortion. During the presidential debate he said he would not sign a national abortion ban into law. He criticized Florida’s six-week ban, which states that people can no longer access legal abortions in Florida beyond six weeks of pregnancy, except in rare circumstances.
Immigration As vice-president, she was tasked with tackling the root causes of the record numbers of Central American migrants crossing the southern border. She helped to raise 3 billion dollars for regional investments to encourage immigrants to remain in their home countries. She also said there should be consequences for people who cross the US border unlawfully. Trump has vowed to seal the border by completing the wall and increasing enforcement. He has also promised the biggest mass deportations of undocumented migrants in US history. His vice-president pick, JD Vance, said they would start by removing a million people.
Taxes In 2017, Mrs Harris supported a number of progressive tax programs to expand social security for the elderly by increasing the tax rate on investments. The vice-president will continue to back President Biden's proposal of not raising taxes on Americans earning less than $400,000 per year. Trump has a raft of tax cuts planned. He has proposed making tipped income tax free, a proposal that his opponent Kamala Harris subsequently backed, too. Trump has also called on abolishing the tax on Social Security payments, a move that would be welcomed by retired Americans but would at the same time punch a big hole in the fund.
Foreign Policy She has become more involved in foreign policy since she was elected to the US Senate. Mrs Harris has vowed to support Ukraine “for as long as it takes”, and represented the US at Kyiv's “peace conference” in Switzerland. The vice-president also pledged, if elected, to ensure that "America - not China - wins the competition for the 21st Century" and to shoulder the responsibility of US leadership. The Republican has an isolationist foreign policy and wants the US to disentangle itself from conflicts elsewhere in the world. He has pledged to end the war in Ukraine “within 24 hours” through a negotiated settlement with Russia. The Kremlin has said nothing can be done in 24 hours.
Crime Mrs Harris started her legal career prosecuting child abusers and sex traffickers. She made mention of Trumps conviction and him being found liable for committing sexual abuse in her Democratic party conference acceptance speech. Her offices increased conviction rates, particularly of violent criminals. He has pledged to demolish drugs cartels, crush gang violence and rebuild Democratic-run cities that he says are overrun with crime. His Republican policy platform vows to restore safety in neighborhoods by replenishing police departments.
Climate Kamala Harris has called for a change of the environment before. During the presidential debate, she said she casts the tie-breaking vote to pass the Inflation Reduction Act - which opened up new leases for fracking companies - in addition to funneling hundreds of billions of dollars to renewable energy and electric vehicle tax credit and rebate programs. Trump rolled back hundreds of environmental protections as former president. This time, he is again vowing to cut regulations, particularly as a way to help the American car industry. He has constantly attacked electric vehicles, promising to overturn Biden targets encouraging the switch to cleaner cars.
Healthcare Ms Harris held fairly progressive views about health care earlier in her career. She supported expanding publicly-funded health-care programs in the US that cover the elderly, youth with disabilities and poor. Her campaign stated that she would not push for a single-payer system if elected to the White House. On the campaign trail, she has said that she wants to erase billions of dollars in medical debt for Americans and would work with states on the issue. In his top 20 priorities, Trump promises not to cut Medicare, which is federally provided health insurance for older people. While president he tried unsuccessfully to dismantle the signature legislation of President Barack Obama, the Affordable Care Act, which extended insurance to millions of people. Recently he called for taxpayer-funded fertility treatment, but it's unclear if such a large expense has the support of Republicans in Congress.

Looking at many sources, it seems like the main topics are tax cuts, homelessness, abortion, public education and Medicaid expansion.
Concerning tax cuts, both candidates have stated that they are planning to cut taxes if elected. Donald Trump wants to reduce housing costs by preventing undocumented immigrants from getting mortgages. Kamala Harris has stated that she plans investments in the american infrastructure. She promised mortgage assistance for first-time homebuyers. Although they both didn’t say a lot about homelessness in the United States, they both said that they would reduce housing costs, which is preventative of homelessness.
Abortion is one of the central issues Kamala Harris addresses in her campaign. She has always been pro-choice. Trump himself often said states should be free to decide their own laws on abortion. He also criticized Florida’s six-week ban.
Trump has said America’s public schools “have been taken over by the radical Left maniacs,” and that he wants to close the U.S. Department of Education. Trump thinks that parents should have total or at least near-total control over the education of their children. Harris has vowed to keep the department open. Harris has been an outspoken supporter of public education and has been courting educators’ support. “We need you so desperately right now,” and called it “the most noble of work, teaching other people’s children.”
Donald Trump has not addressed the Medicaid expansion plans yet. Vice President Kamala Harris has outlined a proposal to allow Medicare to expand its coverage of home health care for older Americans. The Democratic presidential nominee announced this plan on the television talk show “The View.”
Looking at former elections, Kansas voters have given 15 percent of their votes to democrats and 82.5 percent of their votes to republicans.

The presidential debate

On September 10, there was a debate between the two candidates. Who gave the most reasoned speech, or maybe no one was going to parry the other's arguments and they were simply told to vote against their opponent? What were the topics of these debates, how important were they. Were they better or worse for the candidates? What public pressure and world situations would help them get elected? You'll find out below.

Trumps opinion of transgender people

In the debate between Trump and Harris, Harris declared that Trump has been telling lots of lies during the debate. She often explained how his statements were false and explained why. The comic above shows an example. There is no evidence that the immigrants in Ohio eat pets. Harris called Trump “extreme” and laughed after his comment. Debate moderators pointed out that city officials have said the claims are not true.
Here's another example of an assumption of Trump: “Now she wants to do transgender operations on illegal aliens that are in prison”

This image could not be loaded.

The story behind this statement is simple. In 2019, Vice President Kamala Harris did express support for a policy that would give access to trans people who depend on state-funded health care to gender affirming care and surgeries. This also includes immigrants and those who are in prison.
What would it mean for transgender people in Kansas, if Trump were to be president once again? Here’s another look at Trump’s opinion of transgender people:

1. Military ban of transgender people
One of the most notable actions Trump took was his decision to ban transgender individuals from serving in the U.S. military. In July 2017, Trump announced via Twitter that the military would no longer allow transgender people to serve "in any capacity." He cited the cost of medical treatment for transgender service members and potential disruptions as reasons, though these claims were widely criticized and refuted by military experts and studies. This policy was implemented in 2019 but was later reversed by President Biden in 2021.

2. Rollbacks of Transgender Protections
During his administration, Trump supported rolling back protections for transgender people that had been expanded under President Obama. For example:

  • Healthcare: His administration revised policies to allow healthcare providers to refuse treatment to transgender individuals based on religious objections. This affected access to gender-affirming care and other essential healthcare services.
  • Education: His administration withdrew Obama-era guidance that allowed transgender students to use bathrooms that aligned with their gender identity in public schools, leaving the decision up to individual states and school districts.

3. Public Comments and Rhetoric
Trump’s public comments about transgender people often reflect a bad or critical view of expanding transgender rights. He has framed certain LGBTQ+ policies, especially those related to transgender healthcare, as excessive or harmful.

4. General Position
While Trump has claimed to support the LGBTQ+ community broadly, many of his actions and policies have specifically targeted transgender people. His administration worked to limit legal protections for transgender individuals in various areas, such as employment, healthcare, and the military. In summary, Trump’s stance on transgender people has been largely unsupportive, with his policies and rhetoric reflecting a conservative viewpoint that often restricts transgender rights and access to services. His administration rolled back several protections that had been put in place to support transgender individuals in areas like healthcare, the military, and education. Trump does support the LGBT community, as he allowed same-sex marriage. Although it seems he has a problem with transgender people.

Kansas' population

Kansas, who are they going to vote for? Will it be a Democrat or Republican state? Information about the state, its landscape, its history, and why they will choose the Republicans. You will find out below.

The red in Kansas

Kansas, oh Kansas,
you are the most beautiful state to us.
Your landscapes, cities, and rivers,
are making our whole body shiver.

In Kansas, the time of history is long,
and the red in our state is so strong.
There live people from young to old,
our belief in God is in what we hold.

Our traditions are what we trust,
so we rise, vote Trump, as we must.
Trump wants to support the police and lower the taxes,
so we can have justice.

The sunflower marks our state,
which we won’t let Harris violate.
In Kansas we just have one choice,
and together we vote with one voice.

We don’t vote for the Democrats,
because all the promises they make, they always forget.
Harris is different from our local culture, and personal views,
we saw it in the interviews.

The American pride that Kansas stands for,
because for the next generation we want more.
Our worries and sorrows have to go away,
so we want Trump to become president and stay.

Abortion is taking harmless lives,
but we want the children to survive.
So vote for Trump’s campaign like then,
and make America great again.

People are laughing about America from all over the earth,
but in our hearts we know our worth.
With our state and our pride,
no matter what happens; we stand tight.

The electoral system

Now you've learned a lot about the people in Kansas and the candidates Kamala Harris and Donald Trump.
But how does an election in the United State work? Which stages does an election in the United States have? What is a swing state? You will find out on this page.

How the elections work

Elections in the United States are very important to the democratic system, which the country is led by.

The thought behind voting for a president is to find a leader who represents the wishes and goals of the majority, which means all the people that voted and agreed with the points the respective president prioritized. To be considered a possible president for the votes, it is necessary to be at least 35 years old and have lived in the US for a minimum of 14 years.

The process of the elections starts with the primaries and caucuses, where the political parties choose their candidate for the general election. There are open and closed primaries, where in the case of a closed primary, which is carried out by the voters in Kansas, only registered party members can vote for a candidate of their party, which is either Republican or Democratic. Later on, at the caucuses, an open discussion is held, that will determine a part of who will compete as a candidate.

Once the candidates are chosen, the public election campaign begins, where the candidates try to win voters by sharing their political plans, debating and holding speeches. For this process, the potential presidents have to travel a lot, to convince every state of their opinions and goals for the country.

In the general elections, the United States does not take advantage of a direct national vote, but uses the principle of electors, known as the electoral college. Every state is given a certain number of electors, which is based by its inhabitants. In the whole of the US, 538 electors will be distributed across the states, where the people can vote for what parties they want their electoral house to vote for. To win the elections the future president has to get at least 270 electoral votes, which follows the principle of the winner takes it all, meaning the respective president who gets the most votes wins the elections in all states and with them also their political party. In the division, Kansas gets 6 electoral votes, which have in former elections been mostly Republican.

When all the votes have been cast, the electors will be counted and make a final decision about who’s going to be the president of the United States by January 20th. That’s when the president is officially confirmed and takes office.

Prognosis for Kansas

Who will the people of Kansas elect? Who will prove to be their favorite in this debate? Who do they want to see as president? Our predictions about the outcome of the election and how much variation there will be, you find below.

Kansas Population - Which Candidate will provide the most support on their issues?

As my final prediction of the presidential elections 2024 in Kansas, I would guess Kansas to vote for Donald Trump as a candidate of the republican party. Due to the very effective campaigns of Kamala Harris, it might be a possibility for her to be elected in 2024, but Kansas is a very conservative state, and this reflects Trumps political opinions more, than Harris. So to answer my key-question: Kansas Population - Which Candidate will provide the most support on their issues? I think Harris will provide the most support on the Issues of Kansas population. My guess is still, that Trump will win the state this year.

How did she come up with this prognosis? Read it under candidates.
